ALOR STAR: Police have detained a student in connection with the discovery of the body of a newborn baby at an institution of higher learning in northern Kedah on Thursday.

The state Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Datuk Mohd Nashir Ya said the student, in her early 20s, was arrested while seeking treatment for post-labour pain at a hospital here.

“The girl from Sungai Petani is a first year student at the public institution of higher learning.

“We have obtained a remand order on the student for further investigation,” he said in a statement this evening.

Nashir said the body of the baby boy was discovered in a toilet bowl of the institution’s students’ hostel at about 5.30pm on Thursday.

“We are waiting for a post-mortem report to ascertain the cause and time of death,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 318 of the Penal Code for concealment of birth by disposal of a dead body which carries a maximum two years’ imprisonment or a fine, or both upon conviction.
