Submarine killer recaptured after prison escape

Peter Madsen - the man who was convicted of killing Swedish journalist Kim Wall in a self-built submarine three years ago - was caught by Danish authorities on Tuesday (October 20), after he escaped from prison.

Police say Madsen forced his way out of the jail - near Copenhagen - using objects resembling a gun and a bomb belt - and holding a prison employee hostage.

He was sentenced to life in prison in 2018 for murdering, sexually mutilating and dismembering Kim Wall aboard his submarine in Copenhagen harbor.

He was arrested less than a kilometer from the prison, five minutes after police were alerted to his escape.

During the arrest, officers noticed a belt around his torso and moved to a safe distance, suspecting it might contain explosives.

Police later said that nothing indicated that it did.

Authorities say no employees at the prison nor any police officers were injured during the escape or arrest.

Copenhagen's Justice Minister said the ministry is planning a range of new measures to prevent escapes from prison in future.
