Sugar App shows you nearby interesting deals, even lets you bring the price down

There are a couple websites which allow you to set prices of the products: the more people who show interest in a particular product, the lower the price becomes. One such website is Singapore based Haystakt, which allows you to set your own price on the goods you love.

A similar product recently expanded its footprint in Singapore, but instead of a website, its a mobile app. Launched by a company in Shanghai, Sugar App helps you discover the interesting cafes, restaurants and lifestyle outlets around you.

Sugar App is different from other apps that simply recommends new places around you: With Sugar App, you can choose to bring down the price of the items listed, also called skimming. The more people who skims the products, the cheaper it becomes. Every time you skim a product, the price is reduced by S$0.50. If you are happy with the final price, you can purchase the item and redeem it at the outlet, similar to how you would purchase a coupon.

None of the product listings on Sugar pays to be listed on the app, at least for now. The Sugar team seems to be curating the products and listing them on the app, thereby promising quality recommendations to users.

Sugar isn’t just a directory. The establishments we feature are hand-picked for their character and personality. Whether they are multi-million dollar franchises or hole-in-the-wall eateries, you can be sure that every establishment featured on Sugar makes a unique contribution to the colourful urban fabric of Singapore.” – Sugar App

Would the app work in Singapore? Maybe. However, we probably won’t be using it. For one, there seems to be too many different items on the app. There are also simply too many apps out there, from group buying sites such as Groupons, to buy one get one free deals The Entertainer.

As we previously wrote in our article 6 reasons why you should not launch a mobile app just because you can, the level of saturation of the app industry is high. Nothing says saturation quite like the apps industry these days. As of May 2013, there are reportedly upwards of 800,000 apps out there in the two major apps stores Google Apps and iTunes Apps. Fast forward a year later and this number is most certainly expected to grow even more.

Would you use Sugar App? The app is available for download from the iOS app store.
