KUALA LUMPUR: The Sultan of Pahang, Sultan Ahmad Shah defended the appointment of Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik as the seventh International Islamic University (IIUM) president.

The sultan is the constitutional head of IIUM.

In a press release today, the Sultan gave his approval for Dr Maszlee’s appointment to the president post for three years.

“Dr Maszlee is the best candidate as he was originally a lecturer at IIUM and has extensive experience about the university’s environment as he used to be the head of the university’s Academic staff association,” said the university.

IIUM said it was fortunate to have the Education Minister as its president because the management structure was different from other universities and Dr Maszlee was in a position to better guide the university because of his experience there.

The statement said the university management committee, its academic and management staff as well as the students congratulate Dr Maszlee on his appointment.

Dr Maszlee’s appointment as IIUM’s president has drawn criticism from both sides of the political divide, saying that there was “clear conflict of interest.” © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
