Sun Ho’s success in Asia a ‘scam’: City Harvest ex-treasurer

City Harvest’s former treasurer Chew Eng Han said that City Harvest’s claims of singer Sun Ho’s success in Asia were not real.

In court on Monday (18 August), Chew also described one of the achievements as a “scam”.

To illustrate this example, Chew produced in court copies of commemorative stamps which Ho – wife of Kong Hee – was awarded during an event called the China Children Charity Day in 22 June 2004.

Kong had said that the stamp series, together with a plaque, were given to Ho in recognition of her charity work, but Chew argued that the awards were given during an event to anyone who made donations.

“This was an event whereby stars or well-known people were asked to make donations for the particular event,” said Chew. “And because of that particular event, they were then awarded these titles. So your (Kong Hee) claim that Ho Yeow Sun was awarded Ambassador of Love for China Children Charity Ambassador in 2004 because of her past works with children, with schools and facilities is a false statement and a scam as well.”

Chew said this “scam” was one of the factors that led him and other church members to believe that Ho’s successful track record in Asia would lead to success for her US debut album.

Separately, Chew also accused Kong of “consciously” keeping him out of the loop of relevant information so that Kong could “use” him when making necessary financial arrangements.

Chew and Kong are among the six leaders accused of misappropriating church funds to finance Ho’s secular music career.

The trial continues.
