Sungai Petani philanthropist gives away 2,000 bags of rice


SUNGAI PETANI: Local philanthropist Abdul Ghani Haron today had decided to give away 10 tonnes of 5kg bags of rice and was gratified to see his offering to the public snapped up in just 30 minutes.

Two thousand bags of the rice steadily decreased as grateful recipients, mostly individuals from low-income families, queued for the free bag of rice as early as 6.30am.

Ghani distributed the rice from his home in Kampung Masjid, Tikam Batu and Masjid Matang Tengah, in Kota Kuala Muda.

The big-hearted man is a retired Kuala Muda District Education Office staff and it known for his extraordinary charity works.

He had in the past, gave away free cooking oil, chicken, diapers and formula milk for babies, as well as petrol.

This time, the 60-year-old said he spent RM22,400 on the giveaway.

The event has become a tradition of sort here, as this is the sixth time Ghani has done the giveaway.

“I am overwhelmed by the support from well-wishers who had also chipped in to sponsor the rice after reading my Facebook posting,” he said.
