Sunny Hostin's emotional Puerto Rico visit on 'The View'

On The View, co-host Sunny Hostin broke down in tears when she recounted the devastation she witnessed while touring Puerto Rico. Hostin, whose mother is Puerto Rican, visited the island to bring to light the plight of its residents following the devastation from Hurricane Maria. She met people like Samuel de Jesus Diaz, who is forced to wade through contaminated water to power his generator just to keep his insulin cool, and restaurant owner Alejandro Jeffs, who recently reopened his eatery.

Roughly 50 percent of the island’s 3.4 million residents are without power. Hostin spoke with the mayor of San Juan, who said, “Without power, the economy will not start rolling. Without the economy starting to roll, people cannot go back to work. Students cannot go back to school. Our medical system is not functioning the way it’s supposed to.”

Back at The View, Hostin emotionally recounted, “People are suffering and I felt powerless. People were coming up to me and hugging me and saying, ‘Thank you. Please tell people on the mainland we need help.’”
