Surprise opposition bet: Nancy Binay

Nancy Binay is the opposition coalition's surprise Senate candidate for the 2013 polls, with her bid announced less than an hour before the Commission on Elections deadline.

Even Binay herself said she hesitated to run, having eluded the spotlight for several years while working silently as her politician parents' "right hand."

But her name has earlier been floated as a prospective senatoriable, and in fact landed in the top 12 of Pulse Asia's pre-election surveys.

Binay is the eldest daughter of the Vice President Jejomar Binay, for whom she serves as personal assistant.

Her mother, Elenita, also had Binay as assistant during her term as Makati City mayor.

Binay's brother Jun-Jun, is now mayor of Makati City.

She has firmly denied, however, that her family is building a political dynasty.

Binay has four children with businessman husband Jose Benjamin Raymundo Angeles: Jose Benjamin Jejomar Angeles, 11; Maria Elenita Faustina Angeles, 9; and three-year old twins, Juan Benedicto Adelio and Juan Benito Alejandro.

For her Senate bid, Binay has vowed to push for bills and laws prioritizing housing and children's welfare in the Senate.
