More Filipino consumers are moving into the "mobile life" with increasing usage of mobile devices and majority of them consider mobile phones their most important piece of technology, the latest market survey by TNS showed.
According to the "Mobile Life 2013," a survey conducted by world's leading customized research company TNS that looks into the mobile lifestyle and usage of 38,000 respondents globally including 500 Filipinos, technology is changing and shaping consumers' mobile usage and expectations among Filipinos.
The survey examines how people are interacting through their mobile devices and takes a peek at their mobile lifestyle.
Of the 500 sample survey conducted for Metro Manila from November, 2012 to January this year, 64 percent of respondents believe that a mobile phone is their most important piece of technology. This is higher than the 54 percent average across 43 countries surveyed by TNS.
In terms of device ownership, the survey showed that a typical Filipino household owns at least 4.6 percent of the following devices: A mobile phone (89 percent), smartphone (53 percent), tablet (14 percent), desktop (30 percent), laptop/netbooks (37 percent), and smart TV (4 percent).
Ownership of smartphone is expected to increase by 11 percent from the 2012 findings.
Of the 500 sample survey for Metro Manila respondents, 75 percent are using their mobile devices for photos or videos from 73 percent in 2012; 45 percent are browsing the internet from 32 percent; 44 percent are accessing their social networking sites from 34 percent; and 37 percent are checking their emails from a mere 23 percent in 2012.
The study has also identified top five growth potential for mobile phone usage in video calling, wi-fi connection, watching live TV shows, and video streaming.
Joseph "Joe" Webb, head of Digital TNS for Greater China, said that while sending text messages or SMS still accounts for an overwhelming 94 percent of mobile phone usage in the Philippines, other phone features are also gaining usages like wi-fi Internet now at 52 percent.
Mobile phones now serve as "Internet on-the-go," allowing consumers to "always be on."
Based on the findings of the Mobile Life 2013 study, now on its 8th year, the increase in various mobile activities explain the growing trend of wi-fi accessibility in public areas. (BCM)
