Suspend all development projects in flood-prone areas, Gerakan tells Penang govt

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Gerakan has called on the state government to stop issuing new development permits and suspend all development projects in flood prone area.

Its vice chairman Lee Boon Ten said that the state government must investigate the cause of flash floods and rectify it before allowing any of those development projects to proceed.

He said during the Saturday’s flash floods in several area, it was observed that the areas were flooded with muddy waters.

“This is not a natural phenomenon.

“The muddy water was brought about by over-development and uncontrolled hillslope development,” he said in a press conference here today.

Lee said the flash floods’ coupled with muddy waters only started happening in recent years.

“Such frequent flash flooding, which causes pain, suffering and loss of property to the people, are a result of the state government’s failure to monitor hill slope developments.

“So please stop blaming the previous state administration because DAP has been in control of the state for the past nine years,” he said.

Lee also noted that Penangites no longer want to listen to the state government’s excuses.
