Switzerland braces for peace talks, enhances security measures

Swiss authorities have imposed airspace restrictions and will deploy armed F/A-18 fighters for constant patrols from June 5 to 19, SRF reported on June 3. 

Additionally, up to 4,000 military personnel will assist in a variety of tasks throughout this period. Swiss police will also enhance protection of critical facilities and provide air transportation for individuals covered by international law.

Leaders from around the world will meet at the Global Peace Summit in Switzerland from June 15-16, as of June 3, 107 countries confirmed their participation in the summit, according to the Presidential Office.

Leaders from around the world will meet at the Global Peace Summit in Switzerland from June 15-16, though Russia will not attend.

Ukraine hasn't ruled out Russian participation in the Global Peace Summit in the future, but did not extend an invitation to the inaugural event, Presidential Office head, Andriy Yermak, said.

The peace process is "unthinkable" without Russia, the Swiss Foreign Ministry said at the same time.

Ukrainian intelligence has reliable information that Russia wants to disrupt the peace summit, Zelenskyy said on April 24.

China is also trying to disrupt the Global Peace Summit, working to prevent other countries from participating in it, he added.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister George Maloney, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, French President Emmanuel Macron, and other international leaders are expected to attend the summit.

The White House will attend the Global Peace Summit, though U.S. President Joe Biden's participation has yet to be confirmed.

Zelenskyy personally would like to see Biden at the peace summit, he said. His absence will only encourage Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.

Reuters on May 31 reported that China had refused to participate in the peace summit in Switzerland.
