SINGAPORE — Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Transport Baey Yam Keng has revealed that he was diagnosed with stage one nose cancer in November last year, and is currently seeking treatment.

The Tampines GRC Member of Parliament said in a post on his Facebook page on Friday (7 January) that he is in the middle of his radiation therapy sessions, which will be completed in the middle of this month.

"My doctor has cautioned me that as the therapy progresses, I am likely to get tired more easily. The skin in my neck area is also expected to look sunburnt and my voice might change. Some radiation patients might lose hair at the back of the head," the 51-year-old said in his post.

"Luckily, the side effects I currently experience after four weeks of treatment have been manageable, eg mouth dryness, mouth ulcers, loss of taste and fatigue. Unlike chemotherapy, my immunity is not affected."

Baey said that he is fortunate to have discovered his cancer condition at an early stage, when treatment is simpler and there is a very high chance of survival.

"I am still relatively young and have been keeping myself fit. Together with the strong support of my wife, family and friends, I am confident to overcome this challenge and recover well," he added.

"Life has thrown me a curveball, but I will be fine."

During his therapy period, Baey said he will be slowing down his pace of work. As a result, he has sought understanding from his Tampines North constituency residents that he may not be able attend every of its 36 Edusave Award presentation sessions, the first of which will begin on Sunday.
