Tanjung Piai Residents Voice Concerns On Lack Of Infrastructure, Rising Cost Of Living

Tanjung Piai residents hope the candidate to be given the mandate at the Tanjung Piai parliamentary by-election on 16 November would give due attention to their concerns, which include the increasing cost of living, lack of infrastructure and damaged roads.

Asiah Mudek, a 57-year old resident from Pemok, shared that the increased cost of living has forced her to dabble in the production of cakes, banana chips and frozen food like currypuff to supplement their household income.

“We hope the relevant parties will help market the products from the small medium enterprises (SME) as these people, often from the lower income households, do not know how to market their products,” she told Bernama.

Herbal trader and housewife Zarina Hassim noted that access to the internet is crucial to help small businesses market their products online since marketing cost would be much cheaper.

Farmer Hasri Salim, on the other hand, revealed that the roads within his village are often damaged since they were constructed over peat soil. The damage were made worse by lorries plying the area – resulting in frequent accidents involving cars and motorcycles.

In acknowledging this problem, Pekan Nenas assemblyman Yeo Tung Siong said the 10km Jalan Pekan Nenas-Pontian had already been repaired several times because of its deteriorating condition.

According to him, the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government has taken the matter seriously. In fact, it worked with the Universiti Tun Hussein Onn (UTHM)’s Research Centre for Soft Soil (RECESS) as well as the Public Works Department’s Centre of Excellence for Engineering and Technology (CREaTE) to explore long-term solutions by conducting a study on the soil’s structure.

“For the PH government, such issues have always been emphasised and the most important is to find solutions to the issues that concern the interests of the local people and are seen as beneficial not only in the short term but also in the long term,” he said.

Meanwhile, Karmaine Sardini, the PH candidate in the by-election, pledged to prioritise the improvement of transport networks including the Sungai Pulai bridge and the new road linking Pekan Nenas and Tanjung Piai, if he would be given the mandate.

Challenging Karmaine in the by-election are Barisan Nasional candidate from MCA Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng, Gerakan candidate Wendy Subramaniam, Beriasa representative Datuk Dr Badhrulhisham Abdul Aziz as well as two independent candidates, Faridah Aryani Abd Ghaffar and Dr Ang Chuan Lock.
