A palm tree ‘decorated’ with tea bags caught MP Indranee Rajah’s attention just after a cleaner appreciation event on Sunday, 3 May.

“It was like a Christmas tree except that instead of pretty ornaments, this poor tree was festooned with used Dilmah tea bags!” the MP for Tanjong Pagar wrote in a post on her Facebook page.

The inconsiderate tea drinker put the cleaners at risk, she added.

In order to remove the tea bags, a cleaner would have to climb up a ladder in the hot sun, then untangle the strings by hand or cut them, she said.

Another cleaner who could be deployed elsewhere would have to keep the ladder steady to help with removing the tea bags, Indranee pointed out.

Enforcement is difficult because it is difficult to identify the unit from which the tea bags were tossed, and there are no structures or opposite blocks to mount surveillance cameras.

“And if you stop to think about it - this is a matter where the need for enforcement should not even have had to arise in the first place. It is really about mindset and attitude,” she wrote.
