Tech agenda: Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Spring Edition), NAB Show

More than 3,150 exhibitors from 28 countries will be showcasing all kinds of gadgets and electronic devices at the Spring Edition of the Hong Kong Electronics Fair. The latest gear and technology for the audiovisual industry will be on display at the NAB Show in Las Vegas.

The The Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Spring Edition) and International ICT Expo will welcome more than 200,000 visitors and 3,150 exhibitors. Billed as Asia’s largest spring electronics event, it has recently expanded to take in the burgeoning game and e-reader industries too. AEG, Coby, Desay, Goodway, Haier, Motorola, Pierre Cardin, Rollei, Telefunken, Tunbow, and Westinghouse are among the hundreds of leading brands exhibiting in the fair’s Hall of Fame section.

Hannover Messe is the world's biggest industrial fair and is home to the latest industrial technology innovations. The event itself is made up of eight different trade fairs, each focused on a different area of industrial technology. China is this year's partner country with the theme Green Intelligence. In total more than 4,500 innovations will be on display across all categories. CeBIT, now the world’s largest international computer expo, was formally part of Hannover Messe.

The annual BlackBerry Wireless Enterprise Symposium (WES) is now part of BlackBerry World, a conference dedicated to Research In Motion’s (RIM) BlackBerry mobile phone and tablet platform. BlackBerry World features new technology and software announcements as well as discussions about how the BlackBerry mobile solution can be improved. BlackBerry World expects to attract around 5,000, putting it on par with Apple's WWDC and Google’s I/O developer events, but unlike WWDC and Google I/O, BlackBerry World is not just reserved for developers. There are Demo sessions to show products in action, BlackBerry Training sessions, hands-on labs, and keynotes by top industry executives.

CTIA will host more than 1,000 exhibitors and over 40,000 spectators in 2012. The show covers wireless and converged communications, wireless broadband, mobile web computing and data industries, and in 2012 the focus is on "All things mobile." Companies will demo the latest in enterprise solutions, energy-saving products, and emerging mobile entertainment technology. While Mobile World Congress puts the emphasis on consumer devices, CTIA is all about the technologies that power them, including Location Based Services (LBS), Smart Energy, Wireless Health, Intelligent Transportation, Cloud Computing and Mobile Money.

Formerly known as the Futuresonic festival, the FutureEverything festival is a wide-ranging event that includes "world premieres of astonishing artworks, an explosive city-wide music program, and visionary thinkers from around the world." It is considered to be one of the top international ideas festivals alongside TEDx, 99% and South by Southwest. A host of satellite events and workshops will also take place around Manchester parallel to the festival.

The Australian edition of the world's largest digital IT and telecommunications event, CeBIT takes place annually in Sydney, Australia. CeBIT Australia is hailed as the country's largest ICT exhibition (but is only around a tenth of the size of its parent event, CeBIT in Hannover). CeBIT Australia is a focal point of an additional series of events (including Cloud, AusInnovate, eHealth, eGovernment, Mobile, Online Retail and Digital Workshops) that will run concurrently to the exhibition. More than 600 exhibitors and 30,000 delegates are expected to attend CeBIT Australia in 2012.

With 106,450 square meters of exhibition space, Computex Taipei (also known as the Taipei International Information Technology Show) is the largest computer exhibition in Asia, second in the world only to CeBIT in Germany. Many large computing firms have research and development centers or production factories in Taiwan and will launch their new products at the event. A full spectrum of products are set for launch during the event including tablets, e-readers, smartphones, 3D technology and cloud services. More than 120,000 visitors attended Computex in 2011 to see products and services from over 1,800 exhibitors.

Google I/O is an intensive three-day event that focuses on development for Android, Google Chrome, Google APIs and open web technologies. In 2012 it will feature more than 110 talks on Android, Chrome, Google+ and App Engine, plus Code Labs, a Hackathon and Developer Hangouts (live video chats). The conference has already sold out but Google will stream the opening keynote and all key technical sessions live on the web. Catchup videos from all talks at I/O will also be available to watch after 24 hours. Similar developer events include Apple’s WWDC, BlackBerry World and Nokia World.
