Ted Lasso renewed for season 3 before season 2 even films

Jason Sudeikis's football comedy Ted Lasso is back for a penalty shootout.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ted Lasso has been renewed for a third season before the second run has even started filming because of its huge international appeal in the UK, Germany, France and Russia.

Former Saturday Night Live comic Sudeikis stars in the comedy series as an American football coach brought across the pond to manage English football club AFC Richmond in spite of unfamiliarity with the sport.

The second season is set to begin production in London in January, but there's no official word yet when the third run will be shot.

Sudeikis originally played the title character in a series of skits for US channel NBC's coverage of the Premier League back in 2013.

The actor would later collaborate with Horrible Bosses 2 co-star Brendan Hunt, former Saturday Night Live writer Joe Kelly and Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence on a full-length series exploring Lasso in the UK.

Game of Thrones star Hannah Waddingham plays AFC Richmond owner Rebecca Welton, whose ulterior motive for hiring Lasso as manager is to ruin the team as revenge against her ex-husband.

Also starring are Downton Abbey actor Jeremy Swift, Humans' Phil Dunster, Intelligence star Nick Mohammed and Dirty John actress Juno Temple as various members of AFC Richmond's sphere.

THR reports that Ted Lasso broke records for Apple TV with its August debut, accounting for a 25% viewership increase on the streaming service. It remains Apple TV's top-ranking original comedy series thus far.

Ted Lasso is available to stream on Apple TV+.
