Teen who impregnated underaged girlfriend given probation
A 17-year-old youth who impregnated an underaged girl before having sex with another minor was given probation on Tuesday (11 December).
The teenager was 15 years old at the time of both offences – the same age as both of the girls he had sex with. He cannot be named to protect the girls’ identities.
He was ordered to undergo 15 months’ probation and was placed under electronic monitoring for six months, in addition to other conditions. His case will be reviewed in four months.
He had pleaded guilty at the State Courts to two charges of sexually penetrating a minor under the age of 16. Two similar charges taken into consideration for his sentencing.

The teen got to know the first girl in August 2016, after the two became acquainted through the social application Bigo Live. The pair exchanged phone numbers and began chatting.
They entered into a relationship after meeting in person on 12 August 2016.
The following month, the two had consensual unprotected sex in the boy’s bedroom. She subsequently missed her menstruation in October and November. The girl later took a pregnancy test which came out positive.
On 3 December 2016, the girl came down with a high fever. She was then eight weeks pregnant and was warded at the KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Staff there later informed the police of a case of underage pregnancy.
The girl and her parents decided to have an abortion, which was carried out on 9 December 2016. The couple ended their relationship shortly after.
Repeat offender
In August last year, the boy entered into a relationship with another 15-year-old girl. The couple had unprotected sex in the teen’s bedroom in the same month.
The girl suspected that she was pregnant and confided in her schoolmate. However, this turned out to be a false alarm.
On 8 May this year, the girl told her friend that the boy had intentionally injured his own hand with a blunt object during a quarrel with her. Worried that he would harm the girl before breaking up with her, the schoolmate decided to lodge a police report on 9 May.
For sexual penetration of a minor under 16, the boy could have been jailed up to 10 years, fined or both.
