Tengah to be Singapore’s first smart energy town
Tengah will be Singapore’s newest town.
In a bid to create smart and eco-friendly homes for Singaporeans, the Housing and Development Board (HDB) has inked three new research agreements with three different entities at the ongoing World Cities Summit at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre on Tuesday (10 July).
For instance, it entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with SP Group to study the potential of developing Tengah into Singapore’s first-of-its-kind smart energy town.
Announced in 2016, Tengah is touted as Singapore’s newest town in over 20 years as well as the first and biggest smart and sustainable town. The government also plans to release for sale the first batch of HDB flats there by November.

The collaboration with SP Group involves developing and testing a centralised energy software system that will act as a brain to collect, process, analyse, and learn about the energy consumption of each unit, neighbourhood and the entire community in Tengah. The study will be conducted for one year starting this month.
Dubbed as the Smart Energy Concierge, the system will be linked with the energy grid, energy storage systems and solar photovoltaic (PV) generators. Its objectives are to promote greater conservation of electricity, minimise disruption to power services, and channel energy more efficiently to optimise energy use.
As part of the partnership, an Energy Concierge App will be developed that provides future residents of Tengah with the option to link their utilities account. Through this application, they can monitor their power consumption, pay utility bills, subscribe to products and services like smart home solutions and devices, as well as browse electricity retail packages. Those with electric vehicles could also access charging points throughout Tengah and remotely monitor the charging status of their car via the app.
In addition, HDB will also work with SP Group to look into the development of a Centralised Cooling System for residential projects that is more energy-efficient than conventional air-conditioning systems.
Separately, the Housing Board inked a deal with Robin Village Development to study the use of 3D concrete printing for manufacturing unique architectural forms, in a bid to expand HDB’s design and construction capabilities.
The agency also entered into a collaboration with ISO Landscape to research and develop a floating solar system for marine conditions.
“In the face of increasingly complex urban challenges, HDB needs to continually experiment and embrace urban solutions that help us to build better homes of the future,” said its CEO Dr Cheong Koon Hean.
“Together with our local and international partners, we hope to broaden our knowledge and deepen our expertise in the way we harness technology to develop practical solutions to enhance the liveability of HDB estates and support sustainable development in Singapore.”
