SINGAPORE — Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean will be acting Prime Minister (PM) whenever PM Lee Hsien Loong is on leave until Singapore’s fourth-generation team chooses a new leader.

In response to media queries, the PM’s Office (PMO) said on Thursday (8 April) that previously Teo was Acting PM in Lee's absence. When Heng Swee Keat was chosen as the leader of the 4G and appointed Deputy PM, Lee changed this arrangement to make Heng Acting PM in his absence, the PMO added.

“Now that DPM Heng has stood aside as leader of the 4G, I am reverting to the previous arrangement, and will in future appoint SM Teo Chee Hean as Acting PM in my absence. This is the interim arrangement until such time as the 4G chooses a new leader from among themselves,” Lee said.

Earlier in the day, the 4G team announced that Heng is stepping aside as their leader. Lee, Heng and several 4G ministers also held a media conference to discuss the DPM’s decision.
