Tesco has announced plans to scrap plastic-wrapped multipacks across all of its own-brand and branded tinned cans.

Aiming to remove 350 million tonnes of plastic each year, the UK supermarket will be working closely alongside major firms, including Heinz and Green Giant, to banish all plastic-wrapped multipacks. Instead, all tins will be available individually, with no plastic wrap holding them together.

Customers will be pleased to know that the individual cans will still be eligible for Tesco's multi-buy deals.

Products include:

  • Tesco and Heinz soups

  • Tesco, Heinz and Branston baked beans and spaghetti products

  • Tesco tinned tomatoes

  • Tesco and Green Giant sweetcorn

  • Tesco, Princes and John West tuna

This new initiative will be rolled out across all Tesco stores from 2nd March 2020. This contributes to the supermarket's commitment to remove one billion pieces of plastic from its own brand products by the end of 2020.

'We are removing all unnecessary and non-recyclable plastic from Tesco,' said Tesco chief executive Dave Lewis. 'As part of this work, removing plastic wrapped multipacks from every Tesco store in the UK will cut 350 tonnes of plastic from the environment every year and customers will still benefit from the same great value "multipack" price. This is part of our plan to remove 1 billion pieces of plastic in 2020.'

The president of Heinz also commented on the new plans. Georgiana de Noronha said: 'We're excited to be partnering with Tesco on this. While we know we have more to do, this initiative is good news for the environment, and for the millions of people who enjoy Heinz varieties every day, as they'll still be able to benefit from the same great value for money.'

Let's hope this new change will see other supermarket's follow suit.
