Subaru has been a household name for all-wheel-drive vehicles–particularly the WRX STi and Impreza, if names have to mentioned.
But it has also provided some good family-centric runabout just like the Forester and for this review, the XV GT edition.
The Subaru XV GT edition, which was locally introduced at the 2019 Manila International Auto Show, dishes out the regular offerings of the standard XV, but with more flair.
To start, the latest variant addition is the brainchild of engineering company Giken Co. Ltd and Masahiko ‘Jack’ Kobayashi–the person behind the creation of both the Levorg, and the WRX STI, which Subaru is well-known for.
Driven around Metro Manila under horrendous traffic conditions, the Subaru XV GT Edition provides comfort to occupants. Long sitting hours would still take its toll on fuel economy (it runs on petrol), but it provides ample space for regular-sized Asians for both front and rear seats.
Talking about consumption, the XV GT Edition got at about six kilometers per liter in Metro Manila traffic.
But just like the run-of-the-mill XV, the XV-GT is powered by a 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated engine that gives around 154 hp and 196 Nm of torque. And since it is an all-wheel-drive, the driver will enjoy driveability anywhere.
For aesthetics, it does not fall short nor exceed much on expectations.
The leather/carbon-fiber trimmings for its interior makes the vehicle both sporty and elagant. However, this carbon fiber trimmings does not extend all the way to the rear part of the vehicle’s interior.
The contrasting orange stitching around the vehicle highlights the overall design, adding character to the already known image of the vehicle.
On the outside, the XV GT Edition could easily be spotted. Apart from the extended front and rear bumper lips, side skirts, and roof spoiler, the 18-inch rims (which has a new design exclusive to the GT) sports a GT logo in the middle.
Tech-wise, it has been laden with more features that drivers could take advantage of. The steering-responsive headlights–seen on premium badges–is now available on the Subaru XV GT edition.
Driven on a mall with a tight parking space, the XV GT Edition can easily squeeze in, thanks to its ‘just right’ proportions and the dual side-view cameras that displays a good view in the vehicle’s infotainment system.
Since the infotainment part of the vehicle, the XV GT Edition needs a little upgrade on the subject. While it already fits its purpose for sounds and other things, it still does not play videos, which is essential (at least I believe so) if it is marketed as a family vehicle that has been upgraded as the top-tier variant.
The GT Edition comes standard with EyeSight and features Pre-Collision Braking, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, Lane Keep Assist, and Sway Warning, and Adaptive Cruise Control, among other features.
Since the price tag is at PHP 1.768 million, we are expecting that there are a lot of choices in the crossover market that could provide a taller vehicle for the same amount. But this vehicle is still a headturner despite its great advantages and some shortcomings. With all that it offers, you bet its followers will keep on enjoying not just its eye-candy and powerful powertrain benefits, but the evolution it has undergone through the years.
