KUALA TERENGGANU: The revving of motors of nearly 3,000 high powered motorcycles created a tremendous roar as the ‘Terengganu Bike Week 2017’ kicked off at Pantai Batu Burok yesterday.
The mammoth turnout of participants from all over the country, as well as Singapore and Thailand, caused a huge din rarely heard in this sleepy east coast city.
There were all types of motorcycle makes, from Japanese to European and American brands, which attracted some 10,000 onlookers from Batu Burok, Seberang Takir and beyond.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman officiated the opening of the three-day event with a ‘decorative motorcycle contest’, which was followed by musical and cultural performances and events.
Motorcycle enthusiasts and industry players are also in attendance, displaying and selling their merchandise and souvenirs at exhibition booths at Batu Burok; while lovers of classical motorcycles with smaller engine capacities are on hand to showcase their one-of-a-kind machines.
“Events like Bike Week can bring about a transformation in the state’s tourism industry landscape.
“The government is aware that the development of tourism depends heavily on the people’s and visitors’ support to boost economic development,” said Razif, who is also state tourism and culture committee chairman.
The ‘Terengganu Bike Week’ is part of the ‘Visit Beautiful Terengganu Year 2017’.
Razif said that in view of the huge interest shown by bikers for the event, the state government is preparing an area near the state sports complex in Gong Badak as a motorsports hub, to further boost motorbike activity.
Today, the bikers were flagged off by state financial secretary Datuk Abdul Rahim Jusoh at Batu Burok for the convoy’s journey to Dataran Permata, Kampung Baru Seberang Takir.
The convoy was led by Confederation of Terengganu Motorsports Association president Tengku Sri Temenggong Raja Datuk Seri Tengku Baharuddin Sultan Mahmud at Batu Burok.
Tengku Baharuddin expressed his appreciation to the state government and relevant agencies for continuing to support the annual event which has fostered unity among the young and old alike.
At Seberang Takir, Razif’s state assembly constituency, the bikers were treated to a luncheon with the rakyat.
Later tonight, the bikers will be hosted by the Menteri Besar at a dinner at the State Indoor Stadium in Gong Badak, Kuala Nerus.
