The Cubs won, but Scottie Pippen's 'Take Me Out to the Ball Game' lost

It’s a good thing Scottie Pippen’s a Chicago sports legend. Because man, if he wasn’t, his rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” during the seventh-inning stretch at Game 6 of the National League Championship Series between the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers might’ve been an unpardonable sin.

The Cubs tapped Pippen, a six-time NBA champion with the Chicago Bulls, to step into the Harry Caray role at Saturday’s Game 6, with the Cubbies holding a 3-2 lead on the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers. With the hometown team holding a 5-0 lead and sitting just six outs away from their first World Series trip in 71 years, Pip stepped to the mic …

… and offered, um, this:

To be fair, it’s not like Scottie ever claimed to be in the Knowing The Words To Extremely Well-Known Songs That You’re Tasked With Singing In Front Of 40,000 People Hall of Fame. It’s our fault for expecting him to be able to hang in there on it, really.

Despite Pip’s generous decision to let Warren G. off the hook for Least Regulated Wrigley Rendition This Season en route to joining a long list of not-so-distinguished “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” singers on West Addison Street, the Cubs soldiered on, finishing off a 5-0 win that sent Chicago into hysterics and the Cubs to the World Series for the first time since 1945.

The Cubbies will take on the American League champion Cleveland Indians, who are trying to keep Northeast Ohio’s good vibes rolling. Call it a hunch, but I suspect that when the World Series heads to Chicago for Game 3 on Friday night, the Cubs organization might not be inclined to hand Scottie a microphone.
