'The Mummy' Trailer Tease: Tom Cruise Keeps on Running From Trouble

Tom Cruise’s action-movie legacy has been at least partially defined by his fondness for performing his own death-defying stunts — like hanging off the side of an airborne plane in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. Yet a less-appreciated aspect of his gung-ho performances is his skill at running. Which he does a lot. (I mean, A LOT.) So it’s no surprise that in his upcoming reboot of The Mummy, he doesn’t go long without making a break for it.

Universal’s reimagining of its classic monster-movie character — designed to be the first entry in a shared-cinematic universe that includes villains like Dracula and the Invisible Man — won’t release its first full-length trailer until this Sunday. However, in yet another example of a burgeoning online trend, it has debuted a brief promo for that longer future promo. And as one can see from the 15 seconds of footage featured above, it will apparently include the sight of a menacing-looking sarcophagus, a multi-irised female mummy, and Cruise running away from the explosion. (This version of the Mummy has no link to the Brendan Fraser-headlined trilogy that began in 1999.)

The Mummy will co-star Russell Crowe, Annabelle Wallis, Kingsman’s Sofia Boutella, Courtney B. Vance and Jake Johnson, and will be directed by Alex Kurtzman, whose screenwriting résumé includes numerous hits (Mission: Impossible III, the first two J.J. Abrams-helmed Star Trek films, and the first two Transformers installments.) As such, expectations will be high for the Universal franchise-starter when it races into theaters on June 9, 2017.
