‘This Country’ star Daisy May Cooper admits she felt ‘flat’ after winning her BAFTA

Back in 2018, when Daisy May Cooper won two BAFTAs for her show This Country – one for Female Performance in a comedy and the other for Best Scripted Comedy – she felt on top of the world, but she recently revealed that once that feeling passed, life felt really dull.

Speaking on White Wine Question Time, the Circencester-born actress, said that winning the prestigious awards, actually made her feel a bit low.

“You just feel it's very flat. I don't know why the f*** that is!” she told podcast host and creator Kate Thornton.

Joking that she was after more money, Cooper said she’s now looking for the next thing she wants to achieve.

“I've got the BAFTA, but I want more!” she laughed.

“I want more money. I want to have a pool in a big house. I just want for, I don't know, Gregg's to get in touch with like a commercial deal or something where it's like a million quid. I want money for doing absolutely nothing in retirement!”

The actress, whose first major TV part was as a young mum in Doc Martin, said she also feels a huge amount of pressure now she’s had a critically acclaimed show – and that her and brother and co-writer, Charlie, have worried about their ability to create something just as successful.

“You just completely doubt yourself and think that was just a massive fluke and we're never going to be able to write anything ever again,” she said.

“It's also that thing where you think 'I don't think I can actually ever act any other character ever again'.”

Good news for fans of This Country though – the brother and sister writing duo are back at work and have created something very different to their original hit comedy.

“Charlie and I have started writing our new thing, which is very, very different,” she revealed. “It’s a period thing, so it’s, couldn’t be more different from This Country, but it’s funny.”

She continued: “It’s just been brilliant actually writing for different characters… Because with This Country, we kind of couldn’t write for famous actors, so this is actually quite funny to have an actor in mind and be able to write a part for them specifically. It’s very, very early days, but we’re really enjoying it. I think the more we're getting into this new thing, it's just really exciting.”

While Cooper has been very successful writing with her brother, it is something that she doesn’t always really enjoy!

“I f***ing hate it!” she stated, saying her brother had gone off camping with his girlfriend rather than write with her.

She joked: “Mum normally takes his side as well. She definitely loves him more, but I'm the more talented one, so it's fine.”
