Thomas Markle admits to lying to Prince Harry
Thomas Markle has opened up about his relationship with his daughter, the Duchess of Sussex, in a new Channel Five documentary.
In Thomas Markle: My Story, which aired last night, he confessed to lying to Prince Harry about staging paparazzi photographs of himself just days before the royal wedding.
"I'm not proud of that, but I did," he said, adding: "The reality is that those images will sell forever."
Markle went on to reveal how he thinks that Harry and Meghan’s decision to step down as ‘senior’ royal family members was “for money” and that it was “embarrassing” for him.
The 75-year-old also touched on the press attention he'd received, telling the cameras: "Harry, knowing what his mother went through, should be really concerned with what is happening to me."
His strained relationship with his daughter began before the royal wedding, after much speculation over whether Markle would walk her down the aisle. Subsequently, he didn’t attend the wedding after suffering a heart attack.
He revealed that the phone call he made to inform the couple that he was too unwell to attend the wedding, was the last time they spoke.
The former lighting director also described how he "cried a bit" when watching Prince Charles walk Meghan part-way down the aisle.
He said: "My daughter looked beautiful. I wish that I could have been there with her. I was certainly appreciative Charles was there."
He added: "I admit I cried a bit about that. To this day I can't forget that moment, she was beautiful. It was a nice wedding."
The majority of the documentary was recorded over six days at Markle's home in Mexico in October 2019.
