Thousands Attend Funeral of Slain Kazakh Olympian Figure Skater

Thousands of people attended the funeral ceremony for Denis Ten, the 25-year-old figure skater and Kazakhstan’s first Olympic medallist, in Almaty on July 21. Ten died two days earlier after being stabbed with a knife on a street in Almaty.

Ten, the first Kazakh to win a Olympic medal for figure skating, was stabbed in the torso after a dispute with two men who were trying to steal his rear-view mirrors off his car, reports said.

His death sparked national outcry and tributes from fans, athletes, and Kazakh officials.

President Nursultan Nazarbayev paid tribute to Ten after his death on on July 19, and on July 20 ordered Prosecutor General Kairat Kozhamzharov and Minister for Internal Affairs Kalmukhanbet Kassymov to take the case “under special control.” Credit: Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty via Storyful
