GEORGE TOWN: Thousands gathered for the wake of Datuk Ong Teik Kwong at the Khoo Kongsi funeral parlour here today.
Mourners began arriving as early as 8am, with Rela volunteers helping to manage traffic congestion resulting from such a large gathering.
Sounds of hundreds of drums reverberated throughout the ceremony, in accompaniment to prayer chants and traditional rituals.
Many in the crowd were seen silently weeping as Ong's friends and family sang Chinese songs in his honour.
Shouts of "Tailo" (boss) were heard as Ong's casket was carried off for transport to a crematorium in Relau.
Ong was allegedly shot by his own bodyguard, who police believe also opened fire on the public, killing two motorists and injuring five others on the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway on Thursday night.
The man is alleged to have killed Ong inside their car, before exiting the vehicle and randomly firing at motorists.
The bodyguard and another man have since been arrested to facilitate investigations.
