KUALA TERENGGANU: Millions of calories are going to be burnt as 284,000 Umno members are expected to turn out to support the party’s state-level Flag Run in conjunction with its 71st anniversary.

Terengganu Umno executive secretary Razali Bidin said that the party’s Youth and Puteri wings will spearhead the run when the northern zone flag arrives here from Kelantan at Kampung Pachakan, in Kuala Besut, tomorrow.

“At least 200 members will accompany the flag, supported by cyclists, motorcyclists and four-wheel drive vehicles, as it makes its way through the streets of villages and towns in the state for four days,” said Razali, adding that the run is poised to drum-up support for a mammoth gathering of 120,000 Umno members at Bukit Jalil, KL, on May 11.

State Agriculture and Agro-based Industries, Plantation Industry and Commodities committee chairman Datuk Muhammad Pehimi Yusof, who is Jertih state assemblyman, will receive the flag at Kuala Besut.

“From there, the flag will be passed on to each of the Umno division chiefs, before it makes its way to Pahang and then to Selangor and Putrajaya,” said Razali.

He added that from Kampung Pachakan, the flag will be carried to Padang Bola Kampung Teluk Bayu, Kampung Gerai in Setiu and then to Dataran Ketara in Besut.

On Friday, the flag will proceed to Kampung Teris, Dataran Kuala Ping, Dataran Kuala Berang and Sekolah Kebangsaan Tanjung Ampuan Intan in Telemong, Hulu Terengganu.

The proceeding stops are Pasar Manir and Dataran Austin in Kuala Nerus, and Bangunan Umno Gong Kapas in Kuala Terengganu.

On Saturday, the flag will make its way to Sekolah Rendah Gong Kapas, then on to Bukit Chendering, Marang and Rantau Abang, in Dungun.

On the run’s final day, the flag will be brought to Rantau Petronas in Paka, then to Kemasik, Kijal, Bukit Anak Dara, Ibok, Air Putih, Bandar Chukai, Masjid Geliga and Simpang Kg Berenjut in Kemaman, before being handed over to the representative in Chendor, Pahang.
