KOTA KINABALU: Three men were reported missing in waters here after they failed to return from a fishing excursion last night.

A search and rescue (SAR) operation was mounted at 10am this morning, led by Sabah’s and Labuan’s Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA).

Mohd Wapie Said, 34, Amsiran Mijan, 55 and Malik Awang, 40, left for sea at 7am yesterday, with the intention of fishing in Pulau Sepanggar, Pulau Gaya and Pulau Mengalum waters.

“The boat owner, when filing a report at the district police station in Karamunsing this morning, said attempts to contact the trio at 11pm failed, and that they were supposed to return home by 9pm.

“They were all wearing life vests, but did not bring any food supplies.

Besides assistance from the authorities, the boat owner and the men’s relatives are also taking to the sea to trace them,” the agency said in a statement.

Its director, First Admiral Mohd Zubil Mat Som, said besides maritime assets, marine police and villagers are also using their vessels as part of the SAR.
