Three primary school boys drown swimming in monsoon drain

KOTA KINABALU: Three school boys drowned while swimming in a monsoon drain in Kampung Inanam Laut near here, today.

Haikal Faiz, 10, Shahrizal Azhar, nine, and Mohd Kharil Marisani, 10, died while being treated at the Likas Women and Children Hospital between 5.30pm and 6.30pm.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner M. Chandra said the boys were believed to have gone for a swim after school at about 3pm.

“While swimming, one of the boys faced difficulty, prompting his two friends to come to his rescue.

“However, police believed that when the boys were trying to safe one another, all three victims drowned in the river,” he said.

Villagers who saw the incident immediately informed the authorities. Police and fire fighters were deployed to the scene.

Haikal was found unconscious about an hour after the incident, followed by Shahrizal about 11 minutes later.

“Mohd Kharil was found six minutes later and all three boys were taken to the Likas Women and Children Hospital for treatment,” said Chandra.

Shahrizal and Mohd Kharil were pronounced dead by doctors at 5.30pm while Haikal died at about 6.30pm.

Chandra classified the case as sudden death, adding that there was no criminal element found at the scene.
