Tidal surge causes P18-M damage

Iloilo City, Iloilo - The damage by the tidal surge that hit Iloilo has swelled to P18 million.

This was the figure released by Iloilo Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC).

Jerry Bionat, PDRRMC executive director, said that strong winds and subsequent tidal surges last May 28 affected an estimated area of some140 kilometers.

The damage was only initially recorded in the towns of Estancia, Barotac Nuevo, Carles, and Iloilo City.

A consolidated report said such tidal surge has affected more than a dozen localities and has significantly destroyed homes and livelihoods in coastal areas.

Other localities affected also include Ajuy, Anilao, Batad, Carles, Concepcion, Dumangas, Leganes, and San Dionisio towns.

The consolidated PDRRMC report included damage to boats, fishing gears, fishponds, fish products, homes, and rice fields.

The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) of Western Visayas also reported that there was some damage caused in Capiz province.
