In 2011, she was a new candidate who inadvertently became a lightning rod for criticism of the ruling party, getting brickbats for everything from her age to the way she spoke in interviews to her choice of handbag.

But Member of Parliament Tin Pei Ling (Marine Parade GRC) has evidently retained the faith of the People's Action Party (PAP): She will be contesting MacPherson SMC in the upcoming General Election. The ward was hived off from Marine Parade following the recent re-drawing of the electoral boundaries.

Emeritus Senior Minister Emeritus Goh Chok Tong made the announcement after visiting Ms Tin, 31, and her husband Ng How Yue in hospital, where she is recovering after the birth of their first child. Mr Ng is Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Law.

ESM Goh said:

"Lest she is anxious, I passed the message from the Party that she will be fielded in MacPherson in coming GE. I advised her to rest and not worry about the date of the GE. She will not be there at the ND Parade but there will be time for her to turn up at Nomination, and campaign thereafter."

In an interview with Today last month, Ms Tin had expressed her desire to continue serving her constituents and said she was "quite excited" about MacPherson becoming a Single Member Constituency.

She announced the birth of her baby boy this morning.

Both the Workers' Party and the National Solidarity Party have expressed interest in contesting MacPherson SMC.

Yesterday, ESM Goh revealed the "likely" team that will contest Marine Parade. They include ESM Goh, Social and Family Development Minister Tan Chuan-Jin, Associate Professor Fatimah Lateef and Mr Seah Kian Peng. The quartet are all currently MPs for Marine Parade.
