Toilet tryst a 'huge mistake': tearful Smith

All Black halfback Aaron Smith has voluntarily stood down from Saturday's Bledisloe Cup tie with Australia in the wake of his 'toilet tryst' scandal

All Black scrum-half Aaron Smith has admitted his toilet tryst with a mystery woman at a busy airport that saw him dropped for this weekend's Test against South Africa was a "huge mistake". New Zealand coach Steve Hansen suspended the 54-Test veteran for breaching team standards after his fellow players felt he should be punished. Smith was seen entering a toilet cubicle with a woman at Christchurch Airport the day after the Test against South Africa in the South Island city last month. New Zealand media ran grainy mobile phone photographs of Smith, 27, and the woman leaving the airport's disabled cubicle after about 10 minutes. "I've made a huge mistake, a huge error in judgment," an emotional Smith told media in Durban. "I'd firstly like to say a huge sorry to my partner Teagan, her family, my family. "I'm also sorry to my team-mates, NZRU and the New Zealand fans. "My behaviour was unacceptable and if you could respect me and my partner in this situation. I'm just trying to get home to deal with this. Thank you." It is not Smith's first brush with controversy. In 2014, he said he was "hugely embarrassed" after a naked selfie emerged on social media but insisted he had learnt his lesson. He will face a misconduct hearing on his return to New Zealand.
