Top cop says leaked Muhyiddin video not an offence

The leaked video depicting former deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin talking about an alleged money transfer into the prime minister’s bank accounts does not constitute an offence, says the inspector-general of police. "It was a brief recording of a conversation stating certain sum of money being transferred into someone's account. I do not feel that it was an offence," Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said at a press conference at police headquarters in Bukit Aman today. Also present was newly appointed Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman and senior government officials who had earlier attended a meeting by the central committee in charge of immigrants in Sabah. Meanwhile, Zahid said he spoke to Muhyiddin many times and was told that even though the recording existed, it was not his official channel for what was recorded. "It went viral as if it was a move by Muhyiddin and that he has other opinions," said Zahid. "Everyone in this situation will say anything that he felt. That is why I said we have to respect the situation," said Ahmad Zahid, adding that Muhyiddin would continue to give his support to Umno. The leaked video was filmed on Tuesday night at Muhyiddin's home, the day he was sacked from the cabinet as deputy prime minister and education minister. The clip shows him purportedly recounting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's admission that US$700 million (RM2.67 billion) had gone to his personal bank accounts. Muhyiddin had openly questioned Najib on his handling of 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB). Another Umno minister, Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, had also been critical of the prime minister and the debt-ridden state investment firm. This is the second cabinet reshuffle Najib has done since the 13th general election in May 2013, and comes at a time when he is facing allegations of transferring state funds into his personal accounts. His brainchild, state investment firm 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), is also being probed for alleged financial improprieties. – July 31, 2015.
