Top Gear returned to BBC 2 tonight (January 26), kicking things off with one of the most ludicrous stunts that's ever been performed on the show.

Presenters Freddie Flintoff, Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris were all up to their usual puerile shenanigans, but Freddie wasn't exactly laughing when he was about to be dropped from 500-foot in a red Rover Metro.

In a completely necessary attempt to get the car from 0-60mph in just two seconds, the show had arranged for Freddie and the vehicle to bungee jump off the side of a dam.

Clearly nervous before the drop, Freddie remarked: "I'd like to see Jeremy Clarkson do this."

Freddie was initially concerned that something had gone wrong, but realising he'd left the handbreak on, he released it and immediately plummeted towards the ground, screaming all the way down.

Fortunately for the car (and Freddie), the bungee jump went without a hitch, and the presenter was clearly exhilarated.

Harris, who was watching on during the stunt, recently opened up to the Radio Times about the "potentially life-threatening" drop, describing his co-host as "fearless".

"It started out me just taking the mickey, all jovial, and actually as it dawned on me that it was potentially life-threatening, I became a bit more concerned for him," he said.

"He is fearless… his DNA is not like normal people’s. He’s not a normal human being, let’s face it."

Top Gear airs on BBC 2 every Sunday at 8pm.
