Top Gun Maverick: Tom Cruise soars in new sequel
No one does action films like Tom Cruise, so it's no wonder that he got a rousing applause at the recent 75th Cannes Film Festival. The actor, flanked by fighter jets in the sky, was moved to tears upon receiving a 6-minute standing ovation at the film's screening.
At the film event, Cruise was also presented with the Palme d'Or award – the most prestigious award at the Cannes Film Festival – given to only 15 people since its inception.
Top Gun: Maverick takes place 36 years after the first film and we see Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise) training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialised mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen. There, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller) as "Rooster," and the son of Maverick's late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw aka "Goose."
Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.
Top Gun: Maverick opens in cinemas today 25 May.
