Top places to stay with a difference in Langkawi

Langkawi boasts hundreds of accommodation options, from basic guesthouses to luxurious villas. But only a few of them can claim to be in any way unique. What follows are ten of the most individual places to stay on Langkawi, to suit all budgets.

Ambong Ambong

A: Jalan Pantai Tengah.
T: +604 955 8428
W: www.ambong-ambong.com

Nestled amidst lush greenery, on a hillside behind Pantai Tengah, this new boutique resort lives up to its billing as a “rainforest retreat”. A real effort has been put into minimising the environmental impact, while not scrimping on comfort levels. Ambong Ambong a perfect spot to get away from it all. Rates start from RM685/night.

Berjaya Resort
A: Karong Berkunci 200, Burau Bay.
T: +604 959 1888
W: www.berjayahotel.com/langkawi

Located between the mountains and the ocean on Burau Bay, this is one of Langkawi’s largest and most popular resorts. What makes Berjaya special is that it is the only hotel on the island to offer accommodation over the water, from junior chalets to spacious suites. Rates for the “over water” experience start at RM1,104/night.

Four Seasons Resort

A: Jalan Tanjung Rhu.
T: +604 950 8888
W: www.fourseasons.com/langkawi

When it comes to unashamed luxury, the Four Seasons has few serious rivals in Malaysia, never mind Langkawi. Faultless service, supreme levels of comfort and stylish decor, go some way to justifying the rates. The most luxurious option, a two bedroom villa with its own pool, is so expensive you can only get the price on application! Rates start from RM2,860/night.

Fox Hill Resort

A: Lot PT 91, Kampung Telok, Ulu Melaka.
T: +604 955 7599
W: www.foxhill-langkawi.com

With three traditional Malay wooden houses, and a location in the rural interior, this resort offers a wholly different Langkawi holiday experience. Despite the rustic feel, modern amenities and a swimming pool make sure that “roughing it” is not part of the Fox Hill experience. Having your own vehicle is advisable. Rates start from RM260/night.

La Pari-Pari

A: 2273 Jalan Teluk Baru, off Jalan Pantai Tengah, Kampung Tasek Anak.
T: +604 955 1010
W: www.laparipari.com

Given its peaceful setting, stylish decor and decent value for money, it’s no wonder this new 12-room boutique resort has been busy since it opened. Pantai Tengah is just a few hundred metres away, but if that’s too much effort there’s a pleasant pool to laze by, and the well-regarded Fat Cupid restaurant to eat at. Rates start from RM275/night.

The Andaman

A: Jalan Teluk Datai
T: +604 959 1088
W: www.theandaman.com

This is one of only two resorts on Teluk Datai, thought by many to be Langkawi’s most beautiful bay. The Andaman offers access to the same great beach as The Datai next door, at a fraction of the cost. There is a wide choice of accommodation, from treetop rooms, to a presidential suite. Rates start from RM665/night.

The Frangipani

A: Jalan Teluk Baru Pantai Tengah, Mukim Kedawang.
T: +604 952 0000
W: www.frangipanilangkawi.com

Quite possibly the “greenest” resort in Malaysia, The Frangipani goes the extra mile to reduce its environmental impact. This means everything from rainwater harvesting, to growing their own fruit and vegetables. A great choice for people who want to be eco-friendly, while still enjoying high levels of service and comfort. Rates start from 580/night.

The Temple Tree @ Bon Ton

A: Jalan Kuala Muda, Pantai Cenang.
T: +604 955 1688
W: www.templetree.com.my

A truly special place to stay, The Temple Tree is made up of a collection of beautifully restored heritage houses. Although it’s hard to imagine a more romantic hotel in Malaysia, the varying room sizes make it perfect for families too. Cats-lovers will be in their element too, as the feline residents outnumber the humans. Rates start from RM570/night.

Tubotel

A: Jetty Pelancongan Cenang, Kuala Cenang.
T: 012 329 4094 (mobile)
W: www.tubotel.com

A highly unusual hotel, the rooms are fashioned out of brightly painted concrete tubes. Tubotel is perfect for young independent travellers, who are happy to trade in room size, for unrivalled sea views, and a sociable vibe. The communal facilities go some way to compensating for the 20-30 minute walk to Pantai Cenang. Rates start from RM168/night.

Zackry Guesthouse

A: Lot 735 Jalan Teluk Baru, Pantai Tengah.
W: www.zackryguesthouse.langkawinetworks.com

On an island increasingly dominated by high end accommodation, Zackry Guesthouse is a real breath of fresh air. The rooms may be simple, but they are super-clean, and in no way uncomfortable. A communal kitchen, where you can cook up your own food, and cheap drinks, add to Zackry’s appeal. It’s very popular, so book well in advance. Rates start from RM45/night.
