‘Top player’ – Arsenal, Spurs tipped to make shock signing of out-of-favour Newcastle man
Newcastle United winger Allan Saint-Maximin would be a solid signing for Arsenal or Tottenham, according to former Premier League striker Louis Saha.
Saint-Maximin has fallen out of favour under Eddie Howe after being one of Steve Bruce’s most important players.
The French winger will forever be a fan favourite on Tyneside, but must be feeling frustrated at the lack of opportunities this season.
He has only started five matches across all competitions in 2022-23, though a couple of injuries have not helped his cause.
Saint-Maximin was linked with an exit in the winter transfer window but ultimately stayed put, even with the addition of Anthony Gordon from Everton.
Nottingham Forest reportedly made an ambitious enquiry about the availability of the 25-year-old during negotiations over the loan deal for Chris Wood.
There were also some surprising links to Italy, with one report from Juve Dipendenza saying Newcastle were looking to offer Juventus Saint-Maximin in exchange for former Everton striker Moise Kean.
However, ex-Tottenham star Louis Saha actually thinks Saint-Maximin would be a handy signing for Antonio Conte’s side, as well as Premier League leaders Arsenal.
“All young players should see how quick football goes,” Saha told GGrecon.
“It’s unbelievable because last season Saint-Maximin was unreal and nobody would have been thinking about the prospect of Newcastle United selling him.
“He’s been unlucky this season with injuries, but he’s a top player and he could potentially find a move to one of the ‘big six’ clubs. I could see Arsenal or Tottenham having a player of Saint-Maximin’s quality and style.”
Saha also discussed the Magpies’ £45million signing of Gordon, whose big-money move has divided opinions.
“I think the deal is good for both clubs,” the Frenchman said. “Everton may have had a player on their hands who wasn’t fully committed because he wanted to move and that’s why he’s gone.
“Everton now have to try and sign the right replacement because their aim is to remain in the Premier League and there’s not a lot of time to bounce back.
“Anthony Gordon is a good player who will definitely help the attacking options that Eddie Howe has and I’m excited to see him play there as Newcastle deserve these types of players.
“He will adapt fairly quickly as he’s already played in the Premier League, so it’s a move that’s good for all parties involved. It makes sense.”
