New in town: Nasi Don — Japanese rice bowls with a Singaporean twist at kopitiam price

·2-min read

The first thing that struck me when I saw the store was their name: Nasi Don and I couldn’t help but stifle a laugh. Literally meaning “rice rice bowl”, the brand new Japanese-Singaporean fusion food stall located in KouFu in Kallang offers the most unique dons.

If you take a look at my profile, you’ll know I’m a sucker for rice and, naturally, I was immediately drawn to what the newest kid on the block had to offer.

Nasi Don - Signature Pork Belly & Nasi Don

Advertising themselves as putting a Singaporean twist on Japanese donburi, or rice bowls, Nasi Don has come up with several interesting creations.

For as low as S$4.90, you can get Nasi Don’s namesake signature, which contains elements from both food cultures just as they promise. Building on a foundation of tempura enoki, onsen tamago and takuan or yellow Japanese pickles, the don is reminiscent of a classic tendon or assorted tempura rice bowls.

Nasi Don’s rendition is truly a rojak of the best of both worlds. The supporting cast of standard nasi lemak toppings like a mix of ikan bilis and roasted peanuts, as well as sambal chilli brings it all together.

If you want something more atas and filling, Nasi Don also has more robust don options. In addition to the same toppings as their Nasi Don, the other dons fire up the protein for a more filling meal.

One menu item that certainly stands out is their Mentaiko Fish (S$7.90). The batter-encrusted fish is adorned with mentaiko mayo, dried parsley and tobiko to top it off.

Though Nasi Don has only just opened at KouFu in Kallang, it seems that they already have plans on expanding their business to Food Republic at Raffles Place! Nasi Don is having an opening special of 10% off and a free add-on for return customers till 31 May 2023. So if you are game on trying their intriguing dons, head down before then.
