Punggol residents now have a new community town square where they can enjoy various activities such as exercise, music and food events.

Offering scenic views of Punggol Waterway, the new town square has an area of 1,620 sq m and a standing capacity of 1,000 people, reported the Straits Times.

Speaking at the launch of the new town square on Sunday (15 January), Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security, Teo Chee Hean, noted that over 26,000 HDB flats and 5,800 private homes have been built in Punggol over the last decade.

“This town square is part of our latest efforts to bring Punggol residents together. It is a good place for residents to gather and bond – located in the heart of Punggol,” he said.

Also opened on Sunday was the Punggol Discovery Cube, the first discovery centre in a housing estate where residents can learn how Punggol developed over the years.

The Punggol Town Square and Punggol Discovery Cube are the latest projects under the Remaking Our Heartland (ROH) programme, which aims to transform HDB towns into more vibrant homes.

The HDB has completed around 43,000 flats in Punggol as at end-2016 since the first public housing project there was completed in 2000. Another 6,500 units are set to be completed in Punggol over the next three years.

Since the announcement of the ROH plans, Punggol’s population has more than doubled from 52,700 in 2007 to 118,100 last year.
