Traffic police clamping down on speedsters

Have a need for speed? Be warned as the Traffic Police are stepping up enforcement efforts to prevent speed driving from errant motorists.

Speaking to local media on Thursday, the Traffic Police addressed the recent spate of high-speed accidents -- particularly at the junction in Bugis -- by assuring the public that they are currently reviewing the penalties for various traffic offences.

They will also be digitalising all speed cameras and red-light cameras so as to enable motorists to receive their summons faster, reported Channel NewsAsia (CNA).

The Traffic Police's announcement comes after two high-speed crashes occurred at the intersection of Rochor Road and Victoria Street -- the latest of which happened just last Saturday when a Lexus ran a red light and slammed into a taxi.

Two weeks before that, a three-vehicle pile-up took place at exactly the same spot where it claimed the lives of three -- Ferrari driver Ma Chi, taxi driver Cheng Teck Hock and taxi passenger Shigemi Ito.

The Lexus driver, 30-year-old Kelvin Seah, was subsequently charged with drink driving and dangerous driving on Wednesday.

Blood samples have also been taken from Ma to test for the presence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances.

According to The Straits Times, the number of motorists beating the red light in the first three months of this year has increased by 14 per cent, from 4,600 last year to 5,400 this year.
