According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool newbie Alexis Mac Allister is the ‘bargain of the summer’ in the Premier League.

The Reds were busy during the summer transfer window as they spent around £150m on four new midfielders.

Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch all joined the club after they spent £35m to sign Mac Allister from Premier League rivals Brighton and Hove Albion.

Mac Allister was one of Brighton’s standout players last season as Roberto De Zerbi’s side surpassed expectations to finish sixth in the Premier League.

The centre-midfielder also impressed for Argentina at last year’s World Cup as he helped them win the tournament for the third time in their history.

The 24-year-old has played in all four of Liverpool’s opening games of the 2023/24 Premier League after his red card against AFC Bournemouth was subsequently rescinded.

Mac Allister was always likely to leave Brighton this summer and it was expected that he would cost around £70m but Liverpool got him for £35m as there was an exit clause in his previous contract.

Romano has praised Liverpool for pulling off this “great signing” at the beginning of their summer rebuild.

“I want to mention Alexis Mac Allister [as the bargain deal of the summer],” Romano said via Caught Offside’s DeBrief podcast.

“For me, this is a great signing by Liverpool. I think they did a very good job. […] For a fee which is close to €40 million, I think this is something incredible.”

This view is also held by Everton legend Leon Osman, who said: “I’m actually going for Alexis Mac Allister [as signing of the season].

“I think £35-40m for a guy who has won the World Cup, I think he’s on an upward curve, his form is getting better. We talk about Tonali for £50m, I just think for the price, it’s an incredible deal Liverpool have got done.”

After Liverpool’s opening day 0-0 draw against Chelsea, Klopp took time to praise Mac Allister and Szoboszlai.

“[Dominik] Szoboszlai was physically impressive. His work rate to the late minute was immense, I didn’t expect that,” Klopp said during a press conference.

“[Alexis] Mac Allister was great at finding small spaces and being a creator. He was also defensive too.

“We didn’t play enough football and that was the problem against Chelsea. We weren’t settled enough, that’s not too surprising.”
