Transfer news - LIVE!

This week, the 2022 summer transfer window finally opens.

Manchester United are hoping to cut some early deals and Erik Ten Hag could be handed a warchest of around £120million as he attempts what surely has to be quite the rebuild.

However, Frenkie de Jong may prove to be out of reach after reports outlined his desire to stay at Barcelona - by buying a new home in the city. Jurrien Timber and Darwin Nunez are targets with the Benfica striker also wanted by Tottenham.

Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are believed to be interested in Raheem Sterling as he moves into the final year of his contract, with no decision yet reached with Manchester City over extending it.

Spurs are hoping to announce their first summer signing today after Ivan Perisic successfully underwent a medical, though their attempts to sign Alessandro Bastoni have hit a stumbling block. In terms of departures, the club are willing to sell Harry Winks but also need to offload non-homegrown players too.

Over at Chelsea, Todd Boehly’s takeover has led to a swell of activity in the market with Jules Kounde tipped to arrive while the club has received a key boost in a potential move for Lautaro Martinez of Inter Milan. Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku has been tipped to head in the opposite direction.

Robert Lewandowski, meanwhile, has made quite the statement. The Bayern Munich striker says his story with the club is “over” as links with a move to Barcelona continue. Bayern CEO Oliver Khan has hit back at those comments, while La Liga president Javier Tebas has said Barcelona are not currently able to sign Lewandowski.

In other news at the club, Serge Gnabry has reportedly been offered a new deal amid Arsenal links and Fabian Ruiz is in a similar position amid talk over his future.

The biggest move on the continent is expected to see Aurelien Tchouameni join Real Madrid for around £75m, despite Jurgen Klopp’s apparent attempts to persuade the midfielder to join Liverpool.

Lukaku wants Inter return

09:28 , Alex Young

Romelu Lukaku is keen to return to Inter Milan after a nightmare first season at Chelsea, reports Simon Collings.

The Belgian faces an uncertain future at Chelsea and is due to hold talks with the club about his role next season.

A move back to the San Siro would be complicated, though, given the finances involved in any deal. New Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is also unlikely to want to take a hit on Lukaku, who would be unable to command the £97.5m fee he cost a year ago. The 29-year-old’s wages are equally problematic.

The possibility of a loan has been mooted however, if Lukaku were to leave, Chelsea would have to find a replacement.

La Liga president Javier Tebas has told Barcelona they not currently able to sign Robert Lewandowski.

The Bayern Munich striker is desperate to secure a move this summer, insisting his story with the Bundesliga champions ‘is over’, but his desire to make the switch to Barcelona could be hit by the club’s financial situation.

“They know what they have to do,” Tebas told Marca.

“They know perfectly well our economic control rules and their financial situation. The rules are there to avoid major economic problems. I don’t know if they will sell De Jong, Pedri or Pepito Perez.

“They know what they have to do - sell assets and earn more, this is what they have to do.

“Barca has had many accumulated losses in the last tax years, some which could have been avoided and they have to stock the pantry.

“Just as Madrid have stocked up, Barcelona have emptied it. Today they cannot sign [Lewandowski].’

Nottingham Forest plan to spend

06:00 , Matt Verri

Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis insists manager Steve Cooper will be sufficiently backed in the transfer market as the club prepare to return to the Premier League for the first time in 23 years.

“Now is the time to give Steve all the ammunition he needs, to be able to not only survive but bring some good results,” Marinakis told The Telegraph.

“We have to invest more. Everybody talks about the television rights and money that comes in, but it is not enough for clubs in the first year.

“That’s why we must not be the poorer relatives of the Premier League. We need to buy some good players and some that will make the difference and have the experience who know the division.

“We need to be careful how we spend and make the right choices.”

Harry Maguire confident of fresh start under Erik ten Hag

05:00 , Matt Verri

Harry Maguire insists Manchester United are ready to make a fresh start under new manager Erik ten Hag.

The United captain struggled for form this season, as did many of his teammates, and there have been rumours about his future at the club.

But Maguire is adamant that the players will improve under Ten Hag and will benefit from the clean slate.

“We’ve had a really low season so for a new manager to come in, I’m sure the first day of pre-season everybody will be buzzing around, doing their best to impress and everyone coming back in shape because we have a big season ahead of us for sure,” Maguire said.

“We know we are going to improve. We’ve got to improve and we’ve got to do better because last season was nowhere near good enough. The new manager will bring in a lot of positive energy, the lads will go with that.

“As players, as individuals, as a team, the confidence of the team, you could see towards the end of the season, the confidence wasn’t there, and the belief in the group, and the belief to go and get results after results because that’s what the club demands. That’s what it expects.”

Fight for Ousmane Dembele is on

Tuesday 31 May 2022 21:15 , Matt Verri

Ousmane Dembele is out of contract at Barcelona this summer and no extention appears to be on the cards.

That means a free transfer is seemingly on the cards with PSG one of the favourites to sign the winger.

However, Sport reports that PSG are focused on situations at the club for now which has delayed any negotiations with Dembele, which could leave other clubs in the driving seat when it comes to signing the Frenchman.

Liverpool are one club who could well be interested, as they look for a replacement for Sadio Mane who is expected to leave this summer. Chelsea have also been linked with Dembele.
