Transparent toilets have arrived in Tokyo

Tokyo’s transparent toilets turn heads

Location: Shibuya

The walls of the spacious cubicles

are made of special glass

which remains see-through

until the user locks the door

The walls then turn opaque

allowing the call of nature

to be answered in private

(SOUNDBITE) (Japanese) 28-YEAR-OLD FUKUOKA RESIDENT VISITING TOKYO, ARISA KOMORI, SAYING:

"It's really cool but I felt uneasy using it. It's clean too."

The toilets were installed at two parks

as part of the "Tokyo Toilet Project"

which aims to reinvent public toilets

as cleaner and safer facilities

(SOUNDBITE) (Japanese) 36-YEAR -OLD TOKYO RESIDENT, CHIERI KUROKAWA, SAYING:

"I use public bathrooms a lot. You can see straight away that there aren't any suspicious people lurking in the toilets, so I appreciate that I feel safer about letting my children use the toilets on their own and wait for them outside."
