MANILA, Philippines — Transport Groups Pasang Masda, FEJODAP, ACTO and others are preparing a consolidated petition to the Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board to increase jeepney’s minimum fare by P2.00.
This, after prices of petroleum products increased again Tuesday.
From the current P8.00, the first 4-kilometer trip will amount to P10.00; P2.00 will be added to succeeding kilometers.
The National Center for Commuters’ Safety and Protection (NCCP), meanwhile, sees the P2.00 increase as too much.
“Ang commuters will be able to adjust to a P1 increase, from P8 to P9, wag naman muna kaagad P10, pagdating na ng bagong jeep, pwede na yung P10,” NCCP president Maricor Akol said.
(Commuters will be able to adjust to a P1.00 increase, from P8.00 to P9.00. But a jump to P10 is too much. P10 is okay with the new jeepney models.)
The commuters group also appealed to equate the possible fare increase with better service.
“Pakiusap lang sana naman habang nag-increase sila, i-improve din nila yung service nila. Sana yung attitude nila, i-improve din nila (I appeal to them to improve their services as they increase the fare. I hope their attitude improves as well),” Akol said.
For jeepney drivers and operators, the increase is reasonable.
“A liter costs P30 or more. That is a favor for us because much has been taken from us,” driver Jojo Adrias said.
“We can no longer cover the increase with the P8.00 fare. It will be unfair for jeepney operators and drivers,” said Pasang Masda President Roberto “Ka Obet” Martin. – Leslie Longboen | UNTV News & Rescue
