Travel restrictions: Australia extends cruise ban until September

Australia has extended a ban on international cruise ships for three months until mid-September, dashing any hopes of late-summer visits Down Under.

The ban applies to any cruise liner with a capacity of more than 100 passengers, and includes no mention of an exemption for travellers from neighbouring New Zealand.

Australian Border Force first announced the ban on cruises in March, when nearly 30 ships were in its waters. It is believed nearly a fifth of all coronavirus deaths in the country are linked to passengers who disembarked from the vessels.

Australia is not alone in banning the arrival of cruise ships at its ports. The US has imposed a similar restriction, while the Seychelles says ships will not be able to return until 2022.

Antipodean travellers hoped Australia and New Zealand might agree a ‘travel bubble’ exemption to restrictions between the two countries, but it was not mentioned in the announcement on Friday.
