Spain will welcome foreign tourists back to the country from July 1, ending its two-week quarantine policy.

Under current restrictions, visitors from abroad must isolate themselves for two weeks on arrival, making leisure trips virtually impossible. Foreign Minister Arancha Gonzalez Laya had previously said the policy would be relaxed in July, without specifying the date. The requirement will be lifted from July 1, a government statement said on Monday.

"The worst is behind us," Foreign Minister Arancha Gonzalez Laya tweeted with emojis of a bikini, sunglasses and a suitcase.

"In July we will gradually open Spain to international tourists, lift the quarantine, [and] ensure the highest standards of health safety. We look forward to welcoming you!"

It remains to be seen whether Britons will be able to visit. The UK government's own 14-day quarantine policy, which will affect returning holidaymakers, comes into force on June 8, but it has been suggested that "air bridge" arrangements could permit trips to some low-risk countries.
