Travel With Food: A taste of Hong Kong at your fingertips

My very last vacation before 2020 took hold and disabled all international travels, was to Hong Kong for a measly four days. Nine months later, I still salivate when I think about some of the best wanton noodles, beef tendon noodles, dimsum, goose meat with rice and even Hong Kong’s version of hawker stores or even Zhi Char (locally known as Dai pai dong,大排檔), I’ve ever had in my life.

It’s going to take a while before international travel resumes, and even then, travel might look different from before. However, the one thing that will not change drastically is the food of every culture. Food remains some of the best ways to experience a new country, or for now, remind you of the good old days of travelling.

From 12 October 2020 to 15 November 2020, Hong Kong Tourism Board, along with eight world-famous Hong Kong food brands available in Singapore, will be providing exclusive promotions and offers to local travellers. If you missed Hong Kong’s food, we’re listing out the offers from all eight brands here, so you can get the most bang out of your bucks with great food from Hong Kong.

JOY LUCK TEAHOUSE

At Joy Luck Teahouse, you get to try out three legendary Hong Kong food brands, from Hoover Cake Shop, Kam Kee Cafe and Tai Hing Fishball Company.

Hoover Cake Shop was founded in 1975 at Kowloon City. It’s an old-school bakery boasting Hong Kong celebrities, including veteran actor Chow Yun-Fat and Liza Wang Ming-Chuen as their clientele.

Kam Kee Cafe is a stalwart in Hong Kong’s cha chaan teng scene. Started in 1967 by “Grandpa Kam”, the humble cafe has served out comfort food to the Shau Kei Wan neighbourhood for more than 40 years before the shop was taken over by its current owners and shifted to its current location at Sai Ying Pun. Kam Kee’s Hong Kong style-milk tea is said to be one of the best in Hong Kong and a favourite of singer-actor Dicky Cheung.

Tak Hing Fishball Company, located in Kowloon City started as a wholesaler for fresh fishballs, hand-beaten daily by Mr Lam Tak Hing, who has been making fishballs since he was 14 years old. When in Hong Kong, do not miss trying out the Curry Yudan (Fishballs), a quintessential Hong Kong street food!

While you may not be able to enjoy the full menu of treats from the 3 brands in Singapore, you can still comfort yourself with the signature offerings of Hoover’s egg tarts, Kam Kee’s pineapple buns and hong kong-style milk tea, Tai Hing’s curry fishballs as well as a variety of desserts and drinks that can usually be found in a Cha Chaan Teng.

In my humble opinion, Cantonese does congee best. At Mui Kee, each bowl of porridge is prepared from scratch, following a five-hour-long process. The raw rice grains are first mixed with mashed century eggs, which help to break down the grains. Exclusive for this period, check out the bundle that’ll give you some of the best of Mui Kee!
