SINGAPORE — A one-year-trial to lower the 40kmh speed limit to 30kmh in two Silver Zones will kick off next April.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced in a Facebook post on Thursday (21 November) that the trial will be conducted in silver zones in Bukit Merah View and Jurong West Street 52.

“Such traffic calming measures are aimed at slowing down motorists’ speeds to make our roads safer for pedestrians, especially for our seniors when they navigate in the Silver Zones,” the LTA added.

The authority said that other traffic calming features, such as a raised junction and road markings, will also be introduced at these zones from December.

It added that it would work with the community during the trial period to refine the implemented measures.

First announced at the Committee of Supply debate in 2014, the Silver Zone scheme implements areas with enhanced road safety measures that make it safer and more convenient for senior pedestrians to cross the roads.

There are currently 17 Silver Zones islandwide. LTA said that it plans to implement 50 of them by 2023.

These zones include features such as two-stage crossings to allow elderly pedestrians to rest at the halfway mark, as well as low-height centre dividers to reduce lane widths and get motorists to drive slower.

Last year, three-dimensional traffic markings were introduced at the Whampoa Drive Silver Zone to make the lane appear narrower so as to encourage motorists to drive slower.

According to the agency, accident rates involving senior pedestrians at such zones have gone down by almost 75 per cent since the scheme began.
